MPNH Floor Extension
Summary of Total Loads and Stresses
in Beams and Columns
Cross sectional area of column = 0.209 m2
Table 3: Column Loads and Stresses
The compressive resistance for Douglas fir is 49.9 MPa according to the NBCC so column failure is not a concern for this project.
Cross sectional area of beam = 0.0929 m2
Length of lateral beam = 1.37 m, Length of longitudinal beam = 1.83 m
Assuming max. bending moment is at midspan of each beam
Table 4: Beam Loads and Stresses
The bending resistance for Douglas fir is 85.0 MPa according to the NBCC. The most significant stress is in B8 but the safety factor is still greater than 2 so there is no concern there.
So we conclude that the floor extension is structurally feasible for the given location and area. However, we still suggest hiring a structural consultant to thoroughly check the feasibility.
