About the Project

About

Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House has been connecting neighbours since 1976 and is involved in the community through various programs and activities. They have childcare, seniors, family resource programs, community development plus many other programs. They work fully in Mount Pleasant and are based in their own purpose built building (four stories) which is a great facility now in its 16 – 20 year bracket with maintenance issues but also sizing issues coming up. The purpose of the building has changed in time and this provides us with some challenges.

Design an extension to the second level of the building to provide additional program and room space. This program would see a floor being constructed in the open space area above our living room. It would also be built in to provide a sound – proof room. Design issues would involve incorporating the floor in such a way as to minimize the change from the natural flow and design of the building. Other design issues are looking at redeveloping the stairway to maximize space potential or building flow. Engineering issues would be on load bearing and fixing the floor in an effective and spacious manner. There would also be heating, ventilation and fire security issues. Fire egress may also be an issue to ensure people are able to exit the building in a safe manner. Fire doors and flow would need to be addressed.
